Guidelines for Recreational Fires Please Follow These Guidelines for Recreational Fires Only seasoned dry firewood may be burned. (no trash, yard waste, flammable liquids, etc.) The fire must be attended by an adult at all times. (do not let the fire continue to burn out when you go to bed, go to the store, visit a neighbor, etc.) It must be a minimum of 15 feet from all combustibles. (house, garage, vehicles, dog house, BBQ pit, etc.) You must have a means of extinguishing the fire readily available at all times. (garden hose, fire extinguisher, bucket of soil, etc.) The fire must be contained to a reasonably small area. 36 inches in diameter and 24 inches in height or less is a good guideline. (chiminea, fire pit, BBQ pit, recessed area in the ground with stones surrounding are acceptable examples) At times, atmospheric conditions may cause a fire or police official to request you to extinguish it. (very dry, very windy, atmospheric convection currents causing smoke to stagnate in the area, etc.) If the smoke is creating a public nuisance a police or fire official may request it be extinguished. (this is a rare circumstance) The fire must be on your privately owned or leased property.
